Want more than one image as your WP lock screen backgrounds. Here's an app.

By Vijay @ 09:09am

Imagefusion

Imagefusion app enable you to create images for the lock screen background from local libraries. If you've used media players in the past where a collage of images are displayed from multiple artist albums, this is the same affect but with images you choose. The end result is best of all &  it's free and really simple to use.

Multiple sources can be used, including the profile pictures of contacts stored on the Windows Phone,  album covers from the local music library and photos from the local library. Images are loaded and tiled on the lockscreen to produce a collage of images that matter to you, adding a personalised touch to the first screen displayed when turning on the device.

Recently updated to version 2.0, Imagefusion now sports an image picker to let you pick the exact images you want in your lock screen background. A new "accent tint" effect has also been added to provide a lock screen tint to match the phone accent colour. It's the little touches like this that really make the difference.

Imagefusion

As noted above, Imagefusion is free and also sports zero advertising so the experience is both clean and clutter-free. A total of six image effects can be added to the chosen collection of items, including black & white, polaroid, sepia, negative and accent tint. Images can be shuffled once selected to create a unique, random affect and it's possible to preview the end result before applying it to the live environment.

Once done, you can save the result for further use externally, or directly apply the new lockscreen background from within Imagefusion. More filters are stated to be on the way, so be on the look out for future updates that include more choice. We've given it a go and can safely recommend the app, especially if you're looking at more ways to personalise your Windows Phone.

You can download Imagefusion from the Windows Phone Store (available for free - Windows Phone 8 only).

TaxiCOP, a real-time taxi fare calculator available now in Windowsphone stores

By Vijay @ 10:20pm

TaxiCOP

Have you ever questioned a taxi fare? Wonder if the cabbie took the most efficient route? TaxiCOP is a Windows Phone app that may help ease your concerns or tell you it's time to switch cab services.

TaxiCOP will monitor your route, time, and mileage to make sure what you pay is accurate. I can see it coming in handy while traveling or if cab services are part of your day to day routine.

When you first launch TaxiCOP you will go through the set-up screen where you give the app authorization to use your location services, choose the distance units and set the pricing (distance and time) and choose the currency. TaxiCOP supports a very healthy list of world wide currencies ranging from Afghani to Zimbabwe dollars.

From there, user interface is rather simple. Tap the "Start" button on the main page of TaxiCOP as your cab ride begins. Your distance, duration and fare is displayed as you travel. When you get to your destination, press and hold the "Stop" button. I like the press and hold requirement because it prevents accidental taps from stopping the fare tracking.

TaxiCOP

Your trip history is logged to the app's Recent Page where you can map out the route taken and compare it with Bing's route recommendation. It will show if your cab ride took you off the beaten path instead of taking the less costly, more efficient path.

In just taking TaxiCOP out for a test drive, the distance calculations were spot on. I would have liked to have seen a way to log your cab history so you can track expenses, distances, and other variables collectively. The Recent Page is nice but you can only look at things trip by trip.

TaxiCOP is an attractive option for those wanting to keep track of cab rides and make sure what you're paying is accurate.

There is a trial version available for TaxiCOP with the full version running $.99. It is compatible with both Windows Phone 8 and 7.x devices and you can find TaxiCOP here in the Windows Phone Store.

Sony providing insurance for thier Smartphones in India

By Vijay @ 05:27pm

http://maxlevel.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/36_Xperia_Z_Ultra.jpg

Sony is one of the few brands that are offering water resistant smartphones in India. However, water damage is not covered under warranty. Essentially what it means is even if you are using a phone that is claimed to be water resistant and somehow manage to damage the phone by water, the device is out of warranty and the user will have to bear the cost of repair.

“Currently water damage is not covered under warranty as most of the times it is accidental. Our devices have the top industry rating. But it requires the ports to be closed,” said Tadato Kimura, Head, Marketing, Sony India.

However, Sony is looking at alternatives to tackle the situation. “It is a very sensitive issue and we are currently working out the details. We could provide customers with an option to take insurance for their phones that covers water damage,” Kimura informed.

Sony is currently working on it and it might take them a couple of months to offer insurance. Nokia already provides the option for customers to get insurance for their phones when they buy it from a Nokia exclusive store. The insurance covers water damage, accidental damage if the phone is dropped and even theft.

Ministry of External Affairs, India., launches ‘one stop shop’ information App

By Vijay @ 01:34pm

India’s external affairs ministry Monday launched a smartphone app – MEAIndia – placing all its different wings as well as the 120 missions under one platform, becoming the first government ministry to do so.

“It’s a one stop shop to give you all you need to know,” said outgoing Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai after inaugurating the app at an event here. He retires July 31.Mathai said through the app the ministry had tried to “adapt and adopt” to the needs of communication today.

Earlier, ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said deciding to go in for the interactive app was a “leap of faith” as no other government department has ventured to do it.

The MEAIndia app will help users find out the nearest Indian mission or post for emergency consular assistance, if required, and also find out how to undertake the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and Haj Pilgrimage, according to a ministry statement Monday. The app will provide all the information required to apply for an Indian passport, locate the nearest Passport Seva Kendra, download the requisite forms, calculate the fees and even track your application status. Online application for passports is also on the way, says the statement.

“You plan to travel abroad for work or study and need to legalize your documents? MEAIndia simplifies the steps involved for you and helps you identify the authorized agencies for attestation/apostle of your documents,” says the release

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Phablet Now Offical in India for Rs. 46,990/-

By Vijay @ 01:17pm

Although I previously mentioned that Ultra Phablet launched in India. Now Sony had officially annouced the availability.

The 6.4-inch phablet will be available on e-commerce sites and retail stores across the country from August 2 onwards.

The Xperia Z Ultra is Sony’s first phablet with 6.4-inch full HD 1080p TRILUMINUS display, something which the company uses in its high-end HDTVs. With 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor paired with 2GB RAM and included 3,000mAh battery with STAMINA mode, Sony claims this phablet can survive up to 16 hours of talk time and up to 820 hours on standby mode.

On the photography front, the phablet features an 8-megapixel camera with 16x digital zoom and an Exmor RS sensor. This is complemented with a 2-megapixel camera at the front. To store your photos, videos and other multimedia files, Sony offers 16GB of internal memory that is expandable up to 64GB using a microSD card.

On the software front, the phablet runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, but as Sony’s recent software update roadmap revealed, the device will soon get the 4.3 Jelly Bean update. Additionally, like the Xperia Z, this phablet too is IP55/IP58 certified, which makes it waterproof and dust resistant.
Sony is pitching this product to rival Samsung’s Galaxy Note phablets. Though it doesn’t have a stylus bundled, according to Sony, one can write and sketch on its screen with a pencil, pen or a capacitive stylus that has a tip of over 1mm in diameter.

As an introductory offer, Sony has tied up with Vodafone to offer buyers with 8GB of free 3G data each month for a period of two months.

All About Google Chromecast wireless streaming

By Vijay @ 09:34am

Just as exciting as Android 4.3 and the new Nexus 7 tablet, is Google’s latest device, the Chromecast.

A tiny HDMI dongle, the size of a thumb drive delivering endless YouTube, Netflix, Google Music, Pandora, and web content to your HDTV for streaming anything and everything. Easily stream content to your big screen for only $35. Andriod Community have had some hands-on. So take a peek after the break.

Lumia 1020 WP_20130724_11_15_57_Pro
As you can already tell from the images, the Chromecast is a 3-inch dongle the size of most USB thumb drives. It has micro-USB on one end (for power, FYI) and the other is a full-size HDMI plug to stream 1080p video right to your TV and home theater. You’ll need micro-USB to power it, which wasn’t mentioned. Overall it’s small, and extremely portable, but we’re worried the bubble on the end will waste two HDMI ports, which could be an issue for some.

The size aside, which hopefully isn’t an issue, this thing has some serious potential. Plug in the micro-USB for power and start throwing HD video, Netflix movies and anything you’d like right to the television for the entire family to enjoy. Using a Wifi 2.4 GHz band (no 5 GHz) to talk to your smartphone, tablet, or laptop, the Chromecast will let you instantly stream things to the big screen.

Lumia 1020 WP_20130724_11_15_47_Pro
Chromecast has some serious potential, and we’re looking for more details (such as mirroring) but for now it only works with a select set of apps. Those being YouTube, Netflix, Pandora Radio, Google Play Music, TV, and Movies, and of course full browsing using Chrome. The idea is dead simple too.

If you’re familiar with controlling any of those on a smartphone, tablet, or laptop, it will be a breeze on the Chromecast because you use the device for controls. Our Android phones can truly control the entire experience now.

One important aspect is the Chromecast works on all devices, and is built to scale perfectly too. You can go from streaming a video from your Nexus 7, to swapping it out and “casting” a tab from Google Chrome on your iPhone 5 in seconds. It does it quick, accurately, and scales perfect. It works in sleep mode so you don’t waste screen time and battery life. So that’s a plus. It sounds too good to be true, but it’s indeed real!

For $35 this is a steal. Buy this amazing little addition right now for only $35.

BMW i3 production car revealed

By Vijay @ 12:28am

BMW has officially revealed the production BMW i3, the company’s first i-Series electric car for the market, a carbon-fiber clad urban vehicle set to reach roads from November. Based on the i3 concept first shown off in early 2011, the new i3 will manage 80-100 miles on a full charge in its cheapest $41,350 form, though a hybrid-style version with a compact two-cylinder engine will effectively double that for an extra $1,150.
P90129770

BMW took the wraps off of the production car at a simultaneous event in New York, London, and Beijing today, ahead of deliveries beginning in Europe this November. The US release, along with availability in China and Japan, will follow on sometime in the first half of 2014.

According to BMW, running costs for the i3 should work out roughly 40-percent less than its 320dA sedan, in Germany at least, over the first three years. That advantage could be even bigger, the firm suggests, depending on the level of local subsidies. It’s worth noting, though, that the first three years of life is unlikely to include a change of the 125 kW Li-Ion batteries.

Best "Battery Performance Staus" app for Windows Phone

By Vijay @ 12:01pm

Battery Performance Windows Phone 8

Battery life on Windows Phone is pretty reliable, where we often don’t have to think about it. Still frequently, our eyes search for the battery status, each time we look at the display. To have a Glance at all the Power Consumption Status in one place. Here is an app.

Battery Performance ($1.99) is admittedly one of the nicest looking battery apps for Windows Phone, at least from our limited exposure. It comes with most features we would perceive as being important for keeping you aware of your phone’s status and it does so in an elegant way.

The main features of Battery Performance for Windows Phone 8 are
  • Estimated Talk time
  • Estimated Web surfing time
  • Consumption rate (per hour)
  • Live tile (including double wide)
  • Lockscreen: Detailed status or Quick status
  • Graphs
  • Notifications (battery low, battery charged)
  • Scores from users around the world for comparison
The design of the app is probably the biggest highlight, the app presents fluid, elegant animations and an eye-catching Modern UI. While battery apps don’t have a reputation for being easy on the eyes, Battery Performance reminds of some other high quality independent apps on our Windows Phone.
The app, like other battery apps, takes a few days to fully calibrate before it starts to give you reliable estimates on performance. And of course the Live Tile can only update every 30 minutes (a Windows Phone OS limitation). Once it all kicks in though, the app is certainly a solid performer.

Battery Performance Windows Phone 8

One of the most unique abilities is Notifications, where you can program the app to alert you if your battery falls below a user-defined threshold e.g. 45%. Likewise, you can have it ping you when the battery is fully charged, with both notifications having an optional “night mode” to avoid interruptions in the wee hours. This does not consume any appreciable battery life, except for the half-hour ping to the Live Tile, which should be negligible

Because of all of that, we have to recommend that you give it a spin, as the app does have a free trial. Indeed, that is probably the only downside of the app: the $1.99 price tag. While we did pay for it due to the high quality of work presented, we can’t help but think it’s a smidge high. Still, with the free trial, we’ll leave it up to you to decide if it is worth it. At the very least, it’s worth your consideration (the app is made by a single indie developer).

Pick up Battery Performance (battery-performance.com) here in the Store, or scan the QR code below or swipe to the right in our app. Windows Phone 8 only. $1.99

The over-the-air update that brings the Nexus 4 to Android 4.3 is pushing out now. No, it doesn't root your phone, and it's really no different than just waiting for the update to push out. It's quick and it's easy and it's a great way to learn one of the basics of working with your Android phone with the command line.

There is still time for the new Nexus 7 tablet to arrive in India and whenever it does come to the country, it is expected to be priced starting INR 17,999 considering the price of the original Nexus 7 was INR 15,999 at launch.

Amazon.in (via a seller) is currently offering the original Nexus 7 for just Rs. 11,999/-, which is a great price. Nokia: your favorite apps are coming to Windows Phone 8, it's simply a matter of TIME

By Vijay @ 04:13pm

According to Engadget: Bryan Biniak, VP and General Manager of Global Partner and App Development at Nokia, was in London today for the UK launch of JobLens, so we took the opportunity to sit down with him and talk Windows Phone 8, the basket in which Nokia has entrusted all its eggs. Being Microsoft's brother-in-arms, Nokia's heavily involved in building out the platform and, despite an increasing number of high-profile apps making the jump, the general health of the WP8 store was the main topic of discussion. Unsurprisingly, Biniak was keen to report the app catalogue and with it, competitiveness, is growing fast. There are still gaps to be filled, however, and if Biniak's claims are to be trusted, all the apps most common to iOS and Android home screens are headed to WP8 in the near future:

We're not having a single conversation with anybody, of any material application that's out there, that isn't going to be coming to the platform. It's not a matter of if -- I had those conversations, the "if" conversations, before -- all of our conversations now are "when."

"It's maturing, and it's time to come in," he said, adding "by the end of the year, there'll be very few, if any key applications that aren't in the development pipeline... or published."

Google has been fairly open about its lack of interest in WP8 in the past, although it did eventually commit to building an official YouTube app with Microsoft's help. Apart from a Google Search app (take that, Bing), you won't find any other of the web giant's services available in app form, from the WP8 store. Biniak commented that as Google's aim is to profit from advertising "they are doing themselves a disservice by not being on every screen." He also used the big G as an example of a company that prefers web-based apps, whereas Nokia is pushing for native apps. "That will get resolved over time, but as consumer demand builds, they're not going to have an option," Biniak said. For clarity, we asked whether Google is actively discussing WP8 apps, to which Biniak replied, "yeah, absolutely." Overall, he painted an optimistic picture of the WP8 store's upcoming stock, but unfortunately, we couldn't get him to spill news of impending apps or release dates. Alas, Instagram addicts, you may still have some time to wait for a first-party client.

HTC One Mini vs HTC One (Video Link)

By Vijay @ 03:59pm

You can almost think the HTC One mini is an HTC One, if you don’t know what to look for. We’ll show you in our HTC One Mini vs HTC One comparison! That’s not only because it sports the same design and materials, but also because it is not much smaller than the HTC One. That is, on paper, and compared side-by-side. However, when you hold the phone and you start to actually use it, you will instantly realize that it is a mini version of the flagship.

Everything else is apparently the same to the untrained eye. Upon close examination you’ll see that the power button no longer acts as an IR blaster, like on the One. The volume rockers have also been redesigned a bit and the LED flash on the back has been repositioned.

For our conclusion, make sure to check out our HTC One Mini vs HTC One video comparison below. Of course, we’ll have a lot more on the One Mini, including comparisons and our upcoming full review, so stay tuned to Mobiindiablog....

BlackBerry Q5 review with Battery Test

By Vijay @ 11:04pm

BlackBerry’s revival rested on its all-new BB 10 software – but the only two BB 10 handsets that have been launched so far have been priced too high to make a difference to markets such as India. The Z10 came in at Rs 43k, and the keyboard-equipped Q10, at a staggering Rs 45k price that was universally criticized. So while much of the world didn’t get very excited about the Q5, India’s mobile market has been very curious about it.

The Q5 is a much cheaper Q10. At just over half the price, it gives you almost a Q10-like experience: the same software, in a cheaper package. Where the Q10 felt premium and heavy, with aluminium touches, the all-plastic Q5 is lighter, but feels sturdy – and is in fact easier to hold than the Q10.

BlackBerry worked hard at distinguishing the Q5, starting with the keypad. It borrows the old Curve model’s smaller but more-spaced-out keypad, making the Q5 look older than the Q10. I’m typing faster on the Q5′s keypad. WOW..

The Q5′s touch-screen has the same 3.1″ square size and 720×720 pixel resolution as the Q10′s, but uses LCD (instead of the Q10′s more modern AMOLED), making it whiter if mildly less capable in bright sunlight. Yet I found the Q5 touchscreen easier to use, for there’s more space under the screen, making it easier to swipe up – an action you use often, to get out of an app.

So the two are well matched. The Q5 is slightly slower, but doesn’t feel sluggish. Both use dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processors and 2 GB of memory, but the Q5 runs at 1.2 GHz against the Q10′s 1.5 GHz. However, I didn’t really load it with apps. Web browser performance on both handsets is terrible.

The real disappointment with the Q5 is its 5 Mp camera, down from the Q10′s 8 Mp. The resolution doesn’t really matter, but the Q5 clearly has a cheaper sensor. Outdoor daylight shots are okay, but indoor or low-light shots are mediocre, noisy.

My other disappointment is. You can’t even make or end a call, or speed-dial, without using the touch screen – which makes it a pain to call or answer when driving. The old “call end” button was a great way to exit apps, but now it’s all touch. There’s no “BlackBerry” key either, to give you quick, context-sensitive menu options on everything – for instance to quickly forward an SMS as an email. Somehow Blackberry 10 is missing Menu & Basic Keys, which are Must for Blackberry..

Overall, though, the BlackBerry Q5 is very capable, and, compared to the Q10, very good value. It matches the Q10 on many counts, and if you can live with sacrificing the Q10′s cooler look and feel, is the handset to buy. The Q5 isn’t sexy enough to make users switch from Android or iPhone. It isn’t cheap enough to get low-end-BB users to upgrade from their older Curve.

So we’re back to the price. A Rs 25k price still doesn’t give BlackBerry a market-saver in India. It desperately needs phones in the Rs 10-15k price range.

Still, the Q5 is good value, and all the more so because BB 10 no longer requires you to pay for BlackBerry service. You just need a 3G plan. This isn’t great for the company – BlackBerry loses some of its service revenue – but it’s nice for the user. For now, this is the handset I’m going to be using.

Battery Test from GSM Arena

14 hours is more than a human being can manage in a single day, so the Q5 will handle all your business calls. If you do less talking, you can even browse the web for hours and view some videos & you’d still have enough juice left when you come home.

By Vijay @ 10:52pm

Brøderbund’s 1993 Prince of Persia 2 game is back in a new avatar. Twenty years on the game is called Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame and is available on Android and iOS smartphones.

The gaming part remains the same wherein gamers run, fight and solve puzzles in the quest to rescue the princess. The game though looks very different with 14 beautifully crafted levels spanning across five different environments. The controls have been optimized for touch displays and the game also promises a new combat system.

Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame is available on the Play Store and the App Store for $2.99 (Rs 199.99).

Next generation Google Nexus 7 listed as ‘Coming Soon’ on India Play Store

By Vijay @ 09:22am

Yesterday, Google announced the much-awaited new Nexus 7 running on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Besides US, the other countries to get the Nexus 7 would be UK, Canada, Germany, Spain, France, Japan, Korea, and Australia. Though India is not on that list, Google India’s Nexus 7 page has gone live with a big ‘Coming Soon’ badge, which is the surest indication that a launch is not that far off.

To remind you, the new Nexus 7 is being offered in three variants— 16GB Wi-Fi, 32GB Wi-Fi and 32GB 4GLTE (US only model). The Wi-Fi versions will go on sale by the end of this month with the 4G model soon to follow.

Talking of specifications, the new Nexus 7 flaunts a 7-inch full HD IPS (1920×1200 pixels) display and is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor clocked at 1.5GHz and paired with Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM. Other features included are a 5-megapixel rear camera, 1.2-megapixel secondary camera, dual stereo speakers, 3,950mAh non-removable battery that is claimed to deliver 9 hours of HD video playback and 10 hours of web browsing.

It’s difficult to speculate how much the new Nexus 7 would cost when it goes on sale in India. But in the US, the 16GB variant is priced at $229 (Rs 13,500 approximately), the 32GB at $269 (Rs 15,800 approximately) and the 4G version at $349 (Rs 20,500 approximately). Currently, the 2012 Nexus 7 costs Rs 15,999 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model and Rs 18,999 for the 32GB Wi-Fi model.

Wants to Know, how much faster the 2013 Nexus 7 is, compared against last year's Nexus 7

By Vijay @06:01pm

The new Nexus 7 (officially listed as 2013 Nexus 7) brings a lot to the table. It is not just the first ‘Retina’ compact tablet, it also brings the sharp display and upgraded silicon at an extremely affordable price.

It’s a big upgrade over last year’s Nexus 7 which already was brilliant. The new Nexus 7-incher is thinner, lighter and has a narrower bezel, making it more comfortable to hold.

Most importantly for geeks, though, it is more powerful. The 2013 Nexus 7 swaps the Nvidia Tegra chip from last year with a shiny new Qualcomm Snapdragon, and the difference is massive. Android Police was the first to run the cross-platform Geekbench test o the Nexus 7 and compare the results against those of last year’s tablet. The difference is staggering. We’ll leave the images speak for themselves.

The new Nexus 7 is nearly five times faster on sequential reads, 2x faster on random reads, and about 1.5x faster on both sequential and random write operations. SQLite performance appears around double that of the first gen N7, as well. That sounds promising.
