VLC Player now back to IOS after 2 years...

by Vijay - 08:11AM

After being pulled off the App Store due to licensing issues, the capable VLC media player has been completely rewritten and is back on Apple’s mobile platform.

The open-source app is now bi-licensed under Mozilla’s Public License v2 and the GNU Public License v2, which VideoLAN believes won’t have any distribution issues under Apple’s rather stringent licensing regulations.

Besides featuring support for all of the video codecs that its desktop counterpart does, VLC for iOS has also been optimized for multi-core decoding, allows WiFi synchronization as well as integration for Dropbox and network streams, and supports video filters, multiple audio tracks, and playback speed manipulation.

There’s even subtitle support, as well as playback via external display and even via AirPlay. VideoLAN is also working on an iOS SDK, which it plans on releasing alongside the 2.1 update for its desktop player this summer. For now, you can get your hands on VLC for iOS for free.
