After attempting to make the cheapest tablet in the world and sell it to students at a highly subsidized price, the Indian government is now looking at developing cheap smartphones, ET reports. The plan is to develop a sub rs.5000/- smartphone and target first time buyers to push the country’s broadband growth.
“A fully functional smartphone is no longer an object of desire but an instrument of empowerment,” an official told ET. The plan is to locally manufacture these smartphones and sell them at cheaper costs to target a massive consumer base in the country.
It will be interesting to see who develops the smartphone in India and if the government can learn from their mistakes on the Aakash front.
